Both adoption and guardianship are two different ways of caring for a child by providing a suitable home. The main difference is:

Legal Guardianship

A legal guardianship is a temporary caregiving situation for a child, often given by the child's legal parents. This is to ensure the child receives necessary care that the legal parent can’t provide at the moment. Legal guardians can have custody of a child until they're 21 years old or until the legal parents terminate the guardianship and reclaim custody of the child.

Adoption

Adoption is the process that legally terminates the rights of a child’s legal or biological parents and are instead placed into the custody of their new adoptive parents. It extinguishes the rights and obligations of the biological parents in favour of you.
